Isla Vista Trading Post

Updated: Mar 7, 2022

IV Trading Post (IVTP) is a student run organization in that recirculates clothing in Isla Vista to combat fast fashion. IVTP hosts "trading events where members of the community can come together to give and take clothing, establishing a small-scale circular economy" (IVTP). Consumers have become incredibly disconnected from how their clothing is made, not knowing that most fast fashion companies use synthetic and chemically dyed fibers, which use large amounts of fossil fuels to be produced and results in massive amounts of waste water which can get dumped and pollute bodies of water around the factories.

Avoiding fast fashion and participating in local clothing exchanges is a great way to become more connected to your community and more environmentally conscious. Almost 85% of our clothing waste ends up in landfills, and fabric in landfills cuts off oxygen to the organic material in the soil below leading to the production of methane, which is a potent greenhouse gas with thirty times the Global Warming Potential of CO2. Re-circulating clothing helps to avoid fast fashion and keep unnecessary fabric waste out of landfills!
